Being a true Southerner, I know good BBQ. It's an innate sense seeded in the DNA of anyone birthed south of the Mason-Dixon. However, this gene usually holds a heavy bias towards a particular region (namely, the one you were born in). But in the battle of whos-BBQ-is-better, the only loser is the person who refuses to appreciate all forms.
KC Pit is definitely KC style BBQ. They have an assortment of meats to choose from: chicken, beef, pork--and different forms of each. The one dish that stands out is the Burnt Endz. These are the outer pieces of the brisket. Charred, yet tender, tastefully seasoned, with sauce for topping (if you like.....I think they're just fine one their own). The ribs are also good, and they have a variety uncommon in Georgia: lamb ribs. I actually wasn't a huge fan of these. Maybe it was just the batch I got, but they were extremely fatty. Still, a nice novelty for any BBQ lover. Also, the side items are equally as good as the meats. The greens get the southern stamp of approval. The baked beans are sweet and savory. They even got the sweet tea right. A Southerner married a Kansas Citian (Kansas Citizen?) and the offspring is delicious (apologies for the cannibalistic analogy).
Now, I'm conditioned to expect the best BBQ to come from a building that looks like a shack. However, at KC Pit, the interior is unusually upscale. I guess thats how they run in KC. Don't be scared off though, the food is perfectly, deliciously, bourgeoisie.
